Commonwealth Medical Fellowships (Enhancing Clinical Skills)
Commonwealth Medical Fellowships (Enhancing Clinical Skills) are offered to doctors and dentists from developing Commonwealth countries to enable them to spend between three and six months at a UK hospital undertaking a programme designed to enhance their clinical skills. These fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Purpose and tenure
The primary aims of Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are for Medical Fellows to learn a new medical or dental skill, to practise the new medical or dental skill, and to network with others in the same and related specialties. The secondary aims are for Medical Fellows to participate in the academic activities of the host organisation, and to conduct small-scale research projects.
Awards are tenable at any approved UK university hospital, for between three months and six months. A minimum of 4 months is recommended.
Nominations
Nominations for Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are invited from specific developing country universities. These universities are responsible for advertising the fellowships to their staff and selecting candidates to be nominated to the CSC.
Each year, the CSC invites each nominating university to forward a specific number of nominations. Each nominating university is responsible for its own selection process and in most cases they will set their own closing date, which will be before the CSC’s deadline for nominations (17 December 2014).
