ASHEVILLE – Surgical Technology students from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College took first place in the state at the North Carolina Alliance of Surgical Technology Educators Scrub Bowl.
The event took place June 23 at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst. This is the fourth time in five years a team from A-B Tech took top honors, according to a news release from the college.
Students competed against eight other graduate level teams from across the state.
“The competition was fierce, as all contestants have been preparing for their national certification exam, which was the subject matter of this tournament,” Daniel Stokoe, clinical coordinator/surgical technology instructor at A-B Tech said in the release. “We utilize this scrub bowl as an intense subject review and morale booster for the upcoming exam, which will ensure that all students are eligible to gain employment anywhere in the United States upon graduation.”
Student contestants were Morgan Booker, Andres Gilbert, Dina Klimovich, Diana Mikhalchuk, Katie Muztafago, Andrew Palmer, Stacy Robert and Irene Santos.
Robin Keith, chair of Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing, coordinated and officiated the event. Daniel Stokoe, clinical coordinator and Surgical Technology instructor and Ashley Gray, Sterile Processing and Surgical Technology clinical instructor were also in attendance.
